Workshop “What can artificial intelligence do?” – Opportunities and challenges for companies in rural areas

As part of the OMEI project, the ILE Ilzer Land and the University of Passau recently invited all companies from the region to the workshop “What can artificial intelligence do?” The event aimed to introduce companies in rural areas to the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), show practical applications and offer them support in dealing with the requirements of the new European AI regulation.

The OMEI project and the importance of AI in energy infrastructure

The integration of renewable energies and the development of new infrastructure concepts are hardly conceivable without innovative technologies - artificial intelligence plays a key role in this. The OMEI project is researching how renewable energies can be intelligently integrated into households using electric vehicle batteries and how fast charging systems with additional electricity storage can be used in locations with weak grid infrastructure. “These applications make it clear how forward-looking AI technologies are and how companies can secure competitive advantages through the early discussion and application of such innovations,” says Gerhard Poschinger, Mayor of Perlesreut.

Focus “What can AI do?” and “How do I implement the AI regulation?”

Prof. Dr. Florian Lemmerich from the University of Passau gave an introductory lecture showing how AI works and the importance of data quality for training such systems. Another focus of the workshop was on the legal aspects of AI application. Jan-Niklas Nieland from PwC Germany explained which steps companies should take into account for a secure and compliant implementation of AI systems.

Interactive simulations and practical applications

During breaks, participants had the opportunity to practically explore various energy applications using AI-based simulations at laptop stations. How does a quick charging system with backup batteries work? What advantages does mobile storage (e-vehicle) or static storage have for me? They were accompanied by experts from the University of Passau, who gave them insights into the technical background and the economic viability of these solutions. The project members in turn benefited from valuable practical feedback from the participants, which can then be incorporated into the simulations.

Innovative power and risk management through AI

The workshop also highlighted the importance of employee training and internal training. Employees should be involved in improving processes through AI and understand how to operate and effectively use these systems. It was also discussed how AI systems can be meaningfully integrated into existing processes and risk management of companies.

Positive feedback and valuable impulses for the region

The workshop attracted great interest and enabled companies to exchange ideas with experts in open discussions, practical examples and specialist lectures. “The event is a unique opportunity for companies in rural areas to obtain comprehensive information about the potential and challenges of artificial intelligence, to develop ideas for their own corporate strategy and to promote understanding of the sustainable use of this future technology,” concludes Stefan Behringer, Spokesperson for the Ilzer Land Entrepreneur Network.
