Unique in the region: practical test for bidirectional charging successful

The OMEI research project has achieved significant success: a first test of bidirectional charging under real conditions was carried out at a meeting of the OMEI project consortium. This means that what will become standard for the automotive industry and private electric car owners in the next few years has already been realized - the electric vehicle as a mobile storage device and energy supplier for the home.

Current flows “backwards”: Bidirectional charging technology being tested

The focus of the meeting was the test of the bidirectional DC wallbox W50, which was developed specifically for the project by the company Technagon (Haus i. Wald). The practical test was carried out on a regenerative Hyundai Ioniq 6, which not only recharges electricity, but also delivers it to the Perlesreut swimming pool project site or feeds it back into the grid. The electric vehicle was made available to the project consortium by the car dealership Platzer & Wimmer from Hutthurm for testing purposes. In the testing phase, the bidirectional charging station will initially only be tested by the OMEI consortium for public use, while the University of Passau carries out the scientific data collection.

Turnaround for private energy supply: reduce costs and protect the environment

Save money and help the climate at the same time? The OMEI project impressively shows the potential of bidirectional charging technology: the electric car can store excess electricity, for example from a solar system on the roof, and return it to the house when the electricity is needed. Consumers could save money because they don't have to buy additional grid electricity. A “mobile electricity storage” also makes it possible to feed the cheaply generated (or purchased) electricity back into the grid using a bidirectional charging station as soon as electricity prices rise. However, this process is not yet legally possible. A variable electricity tariff, which is based on flexible market prices instead of a fixed price, is also crucial for this. The technical and legal foundations for such tariffs are to be created starting next year. An innovative billing system for e-charging stations is also currently being developed as part of OMEI.

Vision for the future: More flexibility for end users

An intelligent interaction between e-vehicles, charging infrastructure, AI-based energy management and measuring systems will usher in a real trend reversal for end consumers at home. In the future, drivers will be able to determine the framework conditions for their electric vehicle themselves and completely control the charging process, storage process, feed-in or recovery process themselves. How much should the battery be charged? How much energy should be used for optimization? This technology offers end users great potential for tailored energy supply and cost savings.
